In September 2010, in Yellowstone National Park, Taylor Wilkes watched this bison bull roll in the dirt, a behavior called wallowing that bison use to shed insects and loose fur. When he got back to his feet, he shook off the dust in one great cloud, and for a moment he stood wrapped in it, horns catching the light and his dark head lowered toward the camera.
This black and white version strips the scene down to light, texture and shadow: the billowing dust, the heavy dark coat and the grass in the foreground, giving the moment a raw, timeless feel.
Tatanka is the Lakota word for the American bison, an animal at the heart of Plains life and culture.
Available on metal, canvas or fine art paper, in sizes from 12" x 18" up to 40" x 60". Canvas and fine art paper prints are made right here in our Wichita, Kansas store. Metal prints are produced by our partner lab, which we believe is the best metal print lab in America, for crisp detail and a sleek, modern finish that's a good fit for offices, restaurants and other commercial spaces.
