Taylor Wilkes made this photograph at a birding ranch in southern Texas during a bird photography workshop. Each day the guides dropped the photographers off in photo blinds, where they spent hours waiting quietly as birds came and went. Patience paid off when this male painted bunting landed on a weathered branch, showing off every color in his palette: a deep violet-blue head with a bright red eye ring, a lime-green back, and a vivid red chest and belly.
Often called the most colorful bird in North America, the male painted bunting looks almost too bright to be real. In French it's known as nonpareil, meaning "without equal." Despite those colors, they're shy birds that keep to thick brush, so a clear, close look like this one is a rare treat.
Available on metal, canvas or fine art paper, in sizes from 12" x 18" up to 40" x 60". Canvas and fine art paper prints are made right here in our Wichita, Kansas store. Metal prints are produced by our partner lab, which we believe is the best metal print lab in America, for vivid color and a sleek, modern finish that's a good fit for offices, restaurants and other commercial spaces.
Want to share it? Painted Bunting is also available as a 5" x 7" art card, blank inside for your own message.
