The Golden Age

The period which is generally regarded to be the 'Golden Age' of English furniture making, the Georgian period, began around the year 1720 and lasted for almost a century encompassing such names as Chippendale, Hepplewhite, Sheraton and the brothers Adam.

Their work took on far greater meaning than ever before since the development of bulk publishing techniques enabled their ideas to have immense widespread impact. Beautiful designs were no longer restricted to the homes of royalty and nobility.

Influenced greatly by upheaval in British socio-economic life, the Georgian style over its 120 year reign went through many changes.  Ranging in style from classical purity to gothic to light and decoration, its influence was felt throughout Europe and America.

What Makes Good Reproduction Furniture?

The practical needs of furniture are constantly changing (Sheraton never designed a video cabinet for example) but the beauty of classic designs lasts forever.

Good reproduction furniture therefore draws upon the classic design influences of the fine English furniture tradition and adapts these to the needs of a modern way of life. Add to this excellent construction, the best wood solids and veneers, and a fine finish and you are well on your way to a perfect  piece of furniture.

Britain's hills are rich with the ruins of a remarkable past, relics etched in stone, echoing of a past built with the blood and sweat of those who died in the shadow of these great structures.

Castles have a timelessness that is awe-inspiring. That they have endured centuries of warfare and the effects of weather is a testimony to the creativity and power of their medieval owners.
